RECYCLED BOTTLE

Absolut Vodka has become an icon worldwide. And it is largely thanks to the glass bottle with its unique design. From an environmental point of view, glass is a good packaging material because it can be recycled again and again. The bottles are manufactured at our nearest glassworks in Limmared, and the clarity of our vodka is reflected in the bottle’s clear glass.

Yet, our bottles are made of 40% recycled glass, which reduces energy consumption by 10% in the otherwise energy-intensive glass manufacturing process. Environmental concerns are also part of our design process, and we work with our own guidelines for eco-design to make conscious and informed choices.

A CLIMATE-NEUTRAL PRODUCTION

SEVERAL YEARS OF PRIORITIZED SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS HAVE RESULTED IN A CLIMATE-NEUTRAL PRODUCTION TODAY. SINCE WE BUILT THE DISTILLERY IN NÖBBELÖV IN 2004, WE HAVE REDUCED ENERGY CONSUMPTION BY 45 PERCENT AND CARBON EMISSIONS BY 80 PERCENT PER LITER OF VODKA.

Today, we have the lowest energy consumption per unit in the world among large distilleries. We have accomplished this through extensive recycling of the heat produced during fermentation and distillation. We also switched to district heating and renewable electricity.

To compensate for the small emissions that we have not yet eliminated, we support small farmers in Mexico who cultivate their land in a sustainable way by planting trees with crops. This is done through reforestation projects certified under the Plan Vivo standard. The result is new life for deforested areas. The support seems natural, as we are dependent on farming well to get a high-quality product.

A portion of the carbon dioxide from production is taken care of by using it for the carbonation of soft drinks. This approach ensures that a byproduct is resource rather than just waste, and is both profitable and environmentally wise. The prime example is stillage, what results from distillation when we make Absolut Vodka. The stillage is rich in protein and is used to feed 250,000 pigs and 40,000 cows every day.

This approach to reduce, reuse and recycle characterizes what we do – both large and small. It is a matter of attitude. Therefore, we separate even leftover food from our canteen and send it off for biogas production.

WATER FOR
AGRICULTURE

CONSTANTLY MEASURING AND ANALYZING OUR RESOURCE USE, EMISSIONS AND WASTE IN OUR DAILY WORK IS A NATURAL PART OF OUR EVERYDAY LIFE. IT IS THROUGH THIS WORK THAT WE CAN FIND INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS THAT IMPROVE OUR SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS. FOR EXAMPLE, WE HAVE CONSTANTLY REDUCED OUR WATER CONSUMPTION PER LITER OF VODKA FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS. AT THE SAME TIME, WE REUSE MORE AND MORE WATER FROM PRODUCTION AND IN DOING SO, CONTRIBUTE TO A CIRCULAR ECONOMY. TODAY, LOCAL FARMERS IRRIGATE FIELDS IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA USING WATER FROM A POND NEXT TO THE DISTILLERY. THE ANNUAL WATER VOLUME IS CURRENTLY AT 25,000 M3.

CUTTING LOGISTICS
EMISSIONS IN HALF

In one day, we produce about 600,000 bottles of Absolut Vodka in Åhus. A production of this size involves a lot of transport. Therefore, we aim to cut our C02 emissions from transport to and from our facilities in half by 2020. Together with our carriers, we have come a long way. At least 25 percent of wheat and 40 percent of stillage transportation use biofuel, for which we have built a filling station with locally produced biodiesel. All vehicles will run on biodiesel in the coming years.

Constantly developing our work with logistics partners is important because 99 percent of all Absolut Vodka is exported. To ship our goods in the most energy efficient way, a full 75 percent of all shipments go directly from the Åhus harbor to destinations around the world. But we always strive to be better. Therefore, we are members of the Clean Shipping Index, which works across the entire shipping industry to reduce its environmental impact.

PROUD LOCAL PLAYER

ABOUT 300 PEOPLE WORK ON THE PRODUCTION OF ABSOLUT VODKA. IN A BROADER SENSE, THE ABSOLUT COMPANY CREATES MORE THAN 1,500 LOCAL JOBS IN RAW MATERIALS, LOGISTICS, PACKAGING, MANUFACTURING AND TOURISM.

Åhus has the experience, knowledge and tradition that have enabled Absolut Vodka to become an export success. Today, Absolut Vodka is Sweden's largest food export product. Ninety-nine percent of all bottles produced are exported to over 150 markets.

This production success story in Åhus attracts visitors from all over the world. Every year, Absolut Akademi – our own brand education experience – receives more

than 1,000 guests from the Pernod Ricard network. Our visitors spend a few days in Åhus where they learn about the brand, manufacturing and the Swedish vodka tradition, as well as food, drink and culture. Add to that another 5,000 people outside our network who visit our facilities. It has put Åhus on the map and benefitted local businesses. Actively contributing to our local community, where many of us live and work, is important for our continued success.
