Midsommar Weekender is a festival with a vision
There’s a new festival to look forward to this summer, namely Midsommar Weekender that combines the traditional midsummer activities with acts such as Perro del Mar and much more. We caught up with Georgia McDonnell-Adams, one of the creative minds behind the event to find our more.
What is Midsommar Weekender?
Midsommar Weekender is a boutique festival celebrating the tradition of Midsommar over 3 days and 2 nights. Combining contemporary live music performances, food, drinks, art and activities. We've taken the age old Swedish tradition and filled it with new and exciting energy. Creating a modern progressive take on this important Swedish celebration, Midsommar Weekender opens the doors for people all over the world to come and experience the proudest and most unique Swedish holiday.
Where is Midsommar Weekender?
Midsommar Weekender is set on the grounds of Ovesholm's Slott - in Skåne near Åhus in southern Sweden. Ovesholm Slott is a 16th century estate owned by Countess Alexandra Hamilton and her father the Count Raoul Hamilton and has been in the family since the 1800's.
What are you hoping to achieve with the program?
We want to use the traditional Midsommar celebration and export it as the ultimate expression of an open, progressive and 'forward-thinking' modern world. By celebrating the values of Swedish society, we want to export Swedishness and be proud of everything it stands for: gender equality, strong worker rights, life/work/family balance etc.
Will I be able to enjoy my herring, fresh potatoes and dance "små grodorna"?
Yes! Of course, however this year you'll be doing it with a modern day twist. Sharing lunch with all your festival friends. Midsommar Lunch will take place on Midsommar Day with everyone from the festival seated at the same time to a huge feast of all the Midsommar staples. By night you'll be entertained by some of the world's most diverse and top artists including Zebra Kats (US), Floating POints (UK), Khuli Chana (South Africa) and more to be announced. Små Grodorna will be there, but guests will have a little help with performances by Sweden's top ballerinas and choreographer Jerome Marchard. Overall it really is taking Midsommar ot the next level, elevating the incredible celebration to include modern and contemporary artists and enterainment.
What are you looking forward to most during the weekender, what's the fomo event?
This is a hard question! We have so many 'aha' moments from the raising of the Maypole and turning it into a LED beacon of the festival, to the lunch with all guests wearing white and flower crowns, waking up in the morning to yoga by the lake. Every guest will come home with a different story to share with all their friends.
