A UNIQUE SUSTAINABILITY CONCEPT
OUR SUSTAINABILITY CONCEPT AND GREAT SUCCESS
Absolut Vodka is one of the world’s most iconic vodka brands. It’s sold all over the world and it is something that we are very proud of. Just as we are proud of our work to minimize our impact on the environment, with the vision of a sustainable, circular source as our guiding star. Because with great brands come great responsibility. And we beleive that the key to reconciling success with responsibility is our own sustainability concept One Source, a strategy we live by in both our hearts, minds and partnerships.
One Source is a quality guarantee, but also a prerequisite for our environmental work. This means that Absolut Vodka is exclusively manufactured in Åhus from local ingredients. The bottles are made from 40 % recycled glass and manufactured at the nearest glassworks in Limmared. The majority of the packing materials are locally sourced and the water is pumped from underground aquifiers. We use hardy winter wheat that is rich in starch, a quality that makes it well suited for vodka production.
Together with the Swedish Agricultural University, we have developed a cultivation technique that optimizes quality, while minimizing the need for fertilizers and crop protection. This is to permanently maintain the quality of the soil and groundwater. The Absolut Company buys 15-20 % of the total weat production in Skåne which is produced by some 400 farmres. We have personal ties to many of our suppliers that often go back generations, ensuring continuity and quality. This partnership also means that farmers who meet our standards are paid better, creating an incentive for future improvements.
Through innovation we have managed to reduce our carbon footprint and as a result our energy consumption has decreased by 45% since 2004. Our carbon emissions are down by 80% per litre of vodka which makes us one of the best in the world among large distillers. We have also developed our own circular business practices, in which resources are used and then re-used as much as possible. In our way of thinking by-products are regarded as resources rather than waste. This is both good for the environment and profitable.
